Assistant Accountant – Higher Education Sector 6-Month Contract | Hybrid Working | Sydney Based- Opportunity to join a leading Sydney-based university

We are currently partnering with a well-established Sydney university recognised for its strong reputation, collaborative culture, and commitment to innovation and academic excellence.
Due to increased workload within the finance team, an opportunity has arisen for an Assistant Accountant to join on an initial 6-month contract basis.
This role offers excellent exposure across both financial and management accounting responsibilities within a large and complex organisation.
The role:
Reporting to the Finance Manager, you will support the wider finance function across month-end processes, reconciliations, reporting, and management accounting activities.
The successful candidate will have prior exposure to budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis, and be comfortable working within a fast-paced and collaborative environment.
This position would suit a proactive and detail-oriented accountant looking to further develop their experience within a large and highly regarded organisation.
Key responsibilities
- Assist with month-end and year-end accounting processes
- Prepare journals, accruals, and balance sheet reconciliations
- Support the preparation of monthly management reports
- Assist with budgeting and forecasting processes
- Perform variance analysis and investigate financial movements
- Support financial data analysis and reporting requirements
- Maintain the integrity of financial information within the general ledger
- Assist with audit preparation and reporting requests
- Contribute to process improvement initiatives across the finance function
- Previous experience within an Assistant Accountant or Junior Management Accountant position
- Exposure to budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis is essential
- Strong reconciliation and reporting capability
- Intermediate to advanced Excel skills
- Excellent attention to detail and communication skills
- Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment
- Experience within higher education, government, or large complex organisations will be highly regarded
- CA/CPA studying or commenced advantageous
