How long have you been with Charterhouse?
“I’ve been at Charterhouse for just over 2 years.”
What is your current role?
“I currently manage the specialist NSW State Government team of 4 people. We look after specialist roles for contingent and permanent staff across the state. The team handle a wide variety of specialist roles at any given time, and it’s a very fast-paced area.”
What is the best thing about working here?
“The freedom and autonomy that you are given. It’s the sort of environment where if you prove yourself to be capable and trusted, then you are given the flexibility and autonomy to lead your team the way that you want. It’s a fluid business that values entrepreneurship and encourages people to grow and learn a lot about themselves. There is a lot of trust within the organisation.”
If you reflect on your time with Charterhouse, what have you had the opportunity to learn?
“I have had the opportunity to learn about how to manage a big, successful account for an organisation. We are consistently in the top 5 suppliers for NSW Government. That is not something I had experience in before. From a management perspective, I’ve learnt a lot about how to manage a team, set expectations and motivate people. Also, Charterhouse are very supportive in investing in their staff. I have just completed an AGSM emerging leaders course which has supported me in managing my team.”
What’s your team like?
“Great! They are a fairly new team. We have had two of them promoted to senior consultants in their first year. They’re highly capable, get on with their work and I receive strong feedback on them from clients, candidates and internally.”
What support do you receive to enable you to be better at your role?
“I receive great support from my direct line manager Jason, our CEO. He provides me with a great deal of autonomy and lets me do my job as I see fit. More than that, he is very supportive in helping me identify future strategic focuses for the team and business.”
How would you describe the culture here?
“Overall, it’s a highly supportive, open, transparent and communicative culture. People have clarity on important information, both positive and negative, from an organisational perspective. There is a great amount of trust. The team in the office are dynamic and friendly, and we’re in a great location overlooking the Opera House. It’s a great place to come to work in every day.”
What is it about recruitment that you love?
“What I love about recruitment is the ability to deliver on what you promise. I enjoy sitting down with senior executives and understanding what they do and what they need. It gives me a great sense of value to spend time with major businesses and then be able to help them meet their challenges on a daily basis.”
What gets you up each and every morning and on the way to work?
“The knowledge that I have a great team around me, a great team I can support and add value to by helping them grow and achieve their goals. I also love supporting a loyal base of customers — I find it highly motivating. It’s nice to be in a privileged position of trust, helping clients with their businesses and candidates with their careers.”
If you could sum up the Sydney office in a sentence . . . ?
“Hardworking, fast-paced, enjoyable environment where people enjoy each other’s company!”
What would be the one piece of advice you would give someone starting at Charterhouse?
“Just apply yourself and focus on the job at hand and the reason you are there, and the rewards will come. The company has a good brand and reputation that will open doors and there is great support available. Your destiny is in your own hands.”
You’ve worked with other recruitment firms. What does Charterhouse do better than anyone else?
“To me the focus and strategy are superior. We focus on not spreading ourselves too thinly, and supporting the great key accounts that we have is something we do really well.”
